Clive Cox’s Reckless Abandon will challenge the top sprinters in the Temple Stakes at Haydock this afternoon

Cox’s unbeaten three year old will make his seasonal debut in the five furlong sprint where he will find stiff opposition in the form of seasoned performers. Hi main challenger will be Sole Power  who was impressive at York last time out when taking the Duke Of York Stakes. The second that day Kingsgate Native re-opposes but is too temperamental to attract any solid confidence. Cases can be made for Spirit Quartz and Tangerine Trees who have both shown good form already this year. If Cox can pull of a win with his horse today it will be a real training coup given that Reckless Abandon is starting his 2013 campaign in such a grade and against such experience. The whispers suggest that this horse is very good and Crockford would not advise punters against this audacious gamble.

Punters are spoiled for choice today in what is an excellent afternoon and evening of racing across the country with good cards at Haydock, York, Goodwood, Chester, Cartmel and Ffos Las. The entry of Luhaif at Haydock has caught Crockford’s eye in (3.15) given his direct form line with Van Der Neer who will be one of the leading contenders for the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. The globe-trotting Afsare will run in the first at Goodwood for Luca Cumani who is in sensational form. The 2.05 is bound to be the first step on another global campaign.  At Ffos Las there looks to be an interesting potential double for Don Cantillon this evening with Odin (5.40) and Oscars Way (8.50) – it is a long way from Newmarket to West Wales.

Don Cantillon
A double on the cards for Don Cantillon at Ffos Las?

Crockford’s Dead Cert – Afsare (Goodwood 2.05)

Excellent second in the Arlington Million last campaign this globe-trotter will certainly give a good account of himself against this field. Has won a listed contest on good to soft and looks certain in these conditions to win again.

Crockford’s Whisper – Luhaif e/w (Haydock 3.15)

Good front running performance at Lingfield saw him finish second to the excellent Van Der Neer who vies for favouritism in the Irish 2000 Guineas today. His campaign in Dubai and that run at Lingfield makes him an outstanding whisper at long odds.

Archer’s Selection – Reckless Abandon (Haydock 3.50)

Archer would have paid attention to the fact that the shrewd trainer had avoided any tilts at the Classics with this unbeaten colt and had gone straight to this Group Two race. The master horseman would have been up on this mount.

Crockford’s gambles around the courses today:
