Aidan O’Brien will look to follow up from his success with Declaration of War in the International with wins for Venus De Milo and Say on day two of the Ebor Festival
After a successful first day with Declaration of War, O’Brien now looks poised to claim the feature race on day two. Venus De Milo has won impressively on three occasions this season and was unlucky to finish second in France. Her task for this afternoon is to take on the highly regarded John Gosden filly The Fugue, in the Group One Yorkshire Oaks. The Fugue may have her ground today but the talented four-year-old is likely to find O’Brien’s filly improving past her. Secret Gesture second in the Oaks behind her stablemate Talent also has strong claims and may well trouble the Gosden and O’Brien fillies. With the withdrawal of Wild Coco, Lady Cecil will be solely represented by Riposte who may be slightly short of this grade.
O’Brien’s Say appears to have the listed Galtres Stakes at her mercy, unless Lady Nouf can produce on the potential that she showed earlier in her career. The improving Star Lahib may be a danger too.
Champion Richard Hughes is well placed to land a valuable double with Thunder Strike in the DBS Premier Yearlings Stakes (1.55) and Wentworth in the big handicap at (3.05).
Crockford’s Dead Cert – Wentworth (York 3.05)
Everything finally came right for Wentworth at Glorious Goodwood and he delivered on the promise that he had shown in other big handicaps. The once classic hopeful will follow up again today with Richard Hughes on board.
Crockford’s Whisper – Thunder Strike e/w (York 1.55)
This juvenile had a good winning run at the beginning of the season, including an eye-catching Derby Day victory. Priced at attractive odds after recent credible efforts he certainly has a strong whisper about him with the magical combination of Hannon and Hughes.
