Michael Owen’s Brown Panther looks ready to pounce on the Melbourne Cup tomorrow
In the early hours of tomorrow morning the Goodwood Cup winner Brown Panther will be set to pounce on “the race that stops the nation” down under – The Melbourne Cup.
The Tom Dascombe trained five-year-old was an impressive winner at Glorious Goodwood back in the summer and has had this Group One contest in mind ever since. There is no doubt that he will face stiff opposition from both the home trained runners and the fellow foreign raiders but he appears to be a cut above the field.
Richard Hughes on Simenon is eye-catching especially given his performance in the Ascot Gold Cup. Others not to overlook include the French trained Dunaden and Ed Dunlop’s globe-trotting Red Cadeaux who both know what it takes to race well at Flemington. Marco Botti’s Dandino appears to be in the form of his life and will certainly be worthy of the support he has been attracting with Ryan Moore on board.
However, at around 20/1 the value still seems to be with Brown Panther. Out of the home team the former Gosden trained Masked Marvel may have the strongest claims.
