Connections are concerned about the soft to heavy conditions at the Ascot today for the mighty Frankel – but Crockford believes that the ground will not stop him from obtaining his fourteenth and final victory
Crockford will be alongside the 38,000 spectators at Ascot today who hope to witness history in the making. Connections are concerned about the potential bottomless ground at the Royal track and will be walking the course and monitoring conditions throughout the morning and up to the race. Frankel will face the second best horse in the world in the French challenger Cirrus Des Aigles and an old rival in Nathaniel (who finished second to him in their first start). Come this afternoon Frankel should race into history and legend.
There is also an excellent National Hunt card at Cheltenham which sees the reappearance of Carruthers and other stars from last season.
Crockford’s Dead Cert – Frankel (QIPCO Champion Stakes 4.05 Ascot)
The greatest ever? He certainly is up there with Eclipse, Ormonde and Dancing Brave. Crockford says if he starts he will win. The ground has allowed his odds to drift out 2/7 this week. That will certainly look value by 4.10 this afternoon. However, for punters Nathaniel will be attractive each way value at 14/1 with Bet 365. The fairytale could end as it begun with Nathaniel chasing the champion home.
Crockford’s Whisper – The Cheka (QIPCO Champion Sprint 2.20 Ascot e/w)
Eve Johnson Houghton sprinter has been unlucky this season not to pick up a Group One. The conditions will be in his favour and play to the strength of his additional stamina over his rivals. At 20/1 with some firms Crockford advises an each way speculation on this consistent sort.
Archer’s Selection – Excelebration (Queen Elizabeth II Stakes 3.30 Ascot)
Having finished second to the mighty Frankel on so many occasions and winning well last time the shrewd Archer would have jumped on this mount. O’Brien has avoided Frankel this time and will be picking up the Champion Mile prize.
