Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes look to strike gold again in another 2yo prize. Their Havana Gold appears to have the £500,00 Tattersalls Millions 2yo Trophy at Newmarket at his mercy.
Unbeaten in all of his starts (except where he unseated his rider in France) the Hannon colt has only ever impressed in his racing. Crockford can not believe that firms have marked him up at 9/4 for today’s race and that Hills have him at 33/1 for the 2000 Guineas. Having hacked up at Newmarket last time out the opposition today should not be too much of a test for him. An each way gamble on him for the Guineas may well be worthwhile before the off today.
The card at Ascot is a mouthwatering one for punters with the progressive Mince looking to add the Bengough Stakes to her winning tally. Later in the afternoon another sprinter has attracted Crockford’s eye – Kingsgate Native, who looks certain to go one better after his unlucky last run. The Challenge Cup is competitive as ever with Captain Ramius looking to follow up his win in the Ayr Gold Cup a fortnight ago; but that will be a stiff test with a number of Ascot winners opposing and with a few others with excellent chances being potentially overlooked by the bookies and punters.
Sizing Europe makes his seasonal reapperance at Gowran Park in the Champion Chase. The champion should make light work of his opposition today if he doesn’t need the race to get back into form.
With excellent races also at Longchamp punters will be spoilt today.
Crockford’s Dead Cert – Kingsgate Native (4.10 Ascot)
Quoted with firms at 100/30 for the Rous Stakes Crockford could not believe his luck. Given luck in running this horse would have certainly won at Newbury in the Group 3 last time out. This race looks weaker again than that contest and this once classy performer looks like he is getting back to form of old.
Crockford’s Whisper – Arnold Lane (3.35 Ascot e/w)
Overlooked by the bookies this consistent performer is well overpriced at 18/1. The whisper is that he will run well today and may just get that win that he deserves. If he does get the win Crockford thinks he certainly will have strong claims on a place.
Archer’s Selection – Havana Gold (2.50 Newmarket)
Archer was a master of the form and would certainly have seen that this colt’s stands out in this field. At 9/4 Archer would have been tempted to back him too.
Crockford’s other gambles around the courses:
Ascot – Bungleinthejungle (2.00), Hawaafez (2.30), Mince (3.05), Arnold Lane (3.35 e/w) and Kingsgate Native (4.10)
Fontwell – Paintball (3.25) and Papradon (4.00)
Longchamp – Shantaram (11.55), Cirrus des Aigles (1.00) and Sirocco Star (1.30)
Gowran Park – Digeanta (2.45), Deutschland (3.15 e/w), Sizing Europe (3.50), Moon Dice (4.20) and Paco Jack (4.55 e/w)
Newmarket – The Gold Cheongsam (2.15), Havana Gold (2.50), Mister Music (3.20 e/w), Vow (4.25) and Angels will Fall (5.00 e/w)
Redcar – Disclaimer (2.05), Collateral Damage (2.40 e/w), Firebeam (3.10), Hototo (3.45) and First Mohican (4.15)
