Scottish trainer Jim Goldie hopes to be the first Scot to win the Ayr Gold Cup since 1975 when he runs Jack Dexter and Hawkeyethenoo this afternoon

Jim Goldie’s ambition is to win the biggest Scottish race before he retires and this year he believes that he has his best chance so far with the talented Jack Dexter and 2012 Stewards Cup winner Hawkeyethenoo.

Both horses have had good Group race form this season and look poised for bold shows in the Ayr cavalry charge. Last year the progressive Jack Dexter won the Bronze Cup at the course before going on to improve significantly. Hawkeyethenoo Goldie’s other charge has excellent form in these big handicaps and finished fourth last time out in a Group One.  The Goldie pair will not have it all their own way in today’s Ayr Gold Cup with their main threats coming from the likes of the improving and consistent Tropics for Dean Ivory and the expensive fellow Scottish trained Loverman. The Great St Wilfred winner Baccarat will also be no push over either. Crockford does expect good runs from both Goldie horses, slightly favouring the battle hardened Hawkeyethenoo.

Excellent cards at Newbury and HQ make the afternoon’s fair intriguing especially with the useful Gifted Girl (Newbury 1.50) and Yeager (Newmarket 5.55) coming back from interesting runs in the US. Shamshon should continue his unbeaten record in the Mill Reef Stakes at (Newbury 2.20) unless Figure Of Speech can finally fulfill his promise.

Crockford’s Dead Cert – Yeager (Newmarket 5.55)

Now back in handicap company, this Noseda horse looks thrown in at the weights given how highly regarded he must be. The horse’s last run was in the Grade One Secretariat Stakes at Arlington, where he did not have the best of passages in the race. This horse could be anything and looks a certainty now back down in grade.

Crockford’s Whisper – Lyn Valley e/w (Newmarket 3.05)

The yard really like this horse and he has shown why with his last two wins. Now top weight in this competitive contest he provides attractive each way odds especially considering man of the moment Johnny Murtagh has been booked to take this ride.

Archer’s Selection – Gifted Girl (Newbury 1.50)

Archer would have noticed that this filly lives up to her name. Her last run behind the classy Dank in the US was certainly noteworthy and back on home turf the famous jockey would have raced to claim this booking.
