Michael Owen’s Brown Panther looks set to pounce on the Goodwood Cup at Glorious Goodwood this afternoon
The 2011 St Leger second Brown Panther was an impressive on his seasonal reappearance at Pontefract last month and will relish both the additional trip and conditions that this afternoon’s Goodwood Cup will present. In what is a strong renewal of the historic race the Tom Dascombe trained horse will have to contend with some seasoned stayers. The greatest threat to him will come from the 2012 Ascot Gold Cup winner Colour Vision who looked to be coming back into form when he ran fourth at the Royal meeting. Altano the German raider has been highly touted by his connections and can not be discounted given the recent success of the Wohler’s yard. Luca Cumani’s Mount Athos could not make the frame at Royal Ascot but may fair better today on his way to another Melbourne Cup bid in the autumn. Crockford believes that the step in trip will bring the best out of Brown Panther and his ability to pounce on his rivals at this new distance will be proven.
Wild Coco looks set to repeat her success in the Lily Langtry Stakes (3.45). As a winner first time out last year the break will not hinder her chances against what looks a weak field. Godolphin will start the afternoon well with both Tha’ir (2.15) and Figure of Speech (2.45) holding outstanding chances in their respective races. Tha’ir was once spoken of as having classic potential now down at handicap level he has the class to show a clean pair of heels to his rivals. Figure of Speech still has the 2014 Classics on his radar and should make up for his unlucky run at Newmarket last time. The only person in his way is the man of the moment Richard Hughes who rides Thunderstrike in the Richmond Stakes. Thunderstrike is not Hughes’s best chance of a winner this afternoon that is more likely to be with the newcomer Remember at (4.20). But if he rides like he did yesterday at the course anything is possible.
Crockford’s Dead Cert – Wild Coco (Glorious Goodwood 3.45)
An impressive winner last year of this contest. Punters have nothing to fear from the long break she has had and that this is her seasonal debut. Lady Cecil will be welcoming a winner back to the enclosure at Glorious Goodwood this afternoon.
Crockford’s Whisper – Brown Panther e/w (Glorious Goodwood – Goodwood Cup 3.15)
Up in trip and in the great form this Tom Dascombe trained star has a real chance today to show that he can be a champion in the stayers category. At potentially each way value prices this whisper is certainly worth the risk.
