Richard Hughes has been the leading jockey at the last three Glorious Goodwood’s, can he be the producer of winners again this year?
Richard Hughes is favourite with the bookies to be the leading rider at Glorious Goodwood again this year and you can see why when you look across his book of rides for the meeting. On day one of the Festival on the Downs he will partner two of his most loved horses – Producer and Duke Of Clarence. Both hold outstanding chances and have claimed victories at the course in the past.
Producer will be a leading fancy for today’s feature race the Group Two Lennox Stakes (3.05) over seven furlongs. Last August Hughes gave Producer a brilliant ride to win the Supreme Stakes at the course. With the horse now appearing to be in the form of his life, after a notable win at Newmarket, it would be hard to oppose him. Richard Hannon the trainer of Hughes’ ride in the race will also be represented by the progressive Professor and useful Libranno. Libranno looks a big price given his clear liking for the track and distance. Roger Varian’s Aljamaaheer will be favourite for the race after his Group Two victory at Ascot, but punters would be unwise to forget that Producer had the beating of him when they last met. The real threat to Hughes may come from the three-year-old Garswood who has obvious talent on his day.
Duke Of Clarence was one of the Magnificent Seven at Windsor for Hughes and appears to have strong claims in the Handicap at (3.40). Having run consistently well this season, the grey will put up another bold show again today. If his rival Harris Tweed can regain his form of old he will certainly be hard to beat, but signs suggest that he may have lost some of his former pomp.
The Molecomb Stakes (2.30) looks muddling for punters, but it may be worth heeding the words of the trainer Ed Walker when he told to the media over the last few days that Reroute will come on from her last run. In the later juvenile race at (4.15) the maiden Sacha Park has some great form already in the book and is fancied by Hughes who takes the ride. Crockford suspects that the newcomer Upholland will run well at a big price too.
With William Knight’s stable in the form that it is, it is worth backing the course winner Aussie Reigns in the handicap at (4.50). Hamoody another track victor deserves at least each way support in the last race on the card.
Crockford’s Dead Cert – Producer (Lennox Stakes 3.05)
This horse had the beating of the favourite when they last met and is clearly in great form. Richard Hughes is very sweet on his chances and believes that he will be hard to beat. With that recommendation and the course form this Richard Hannon horse has to be a Dead Cert in the Lennox Stakes.
Crockford’s Whisper – Aussie Reigns e/w (4.50)
Winner of a nursery at the meeting last year and clearly in good form this season, this William Knight horse has a strong whisper about him. The yard is flying at the moment and has had success at Glorious Goodwood in the past. At 20/1 the three-year-old is outstanding each way value for a place.
