Seven furlong specialist Garswood to show his class in the John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock this afternoon
The winner of Free Handicap and Lennox Stakes was arguably the best over the seven furlong distance last year . After a disappointing reappearance at Sandown in conditions that did not suit, connections will hope for better now back at his favoured trip. In his way of victory is the German raider Amarillo, the reliable Eton Forever and Breton Rock. An on-song Garswood would see these as no match.
Good cards at York, Newmarket and Haydock will provide backers with plenty of opportunities to fill their pockets in readiness for next week’s Derby and Oaks.
The valuable sprint handicap at York (2.50) could go the way of the down in class filly Body And Soul who drops from a Group Two contest on her last outing to this handicap.
Crockford’s Dead Cert – Garswood (Haydock 2.40)
Winner of the Lennox at Glorious Goodwood and third in a Group One in France, Ryan’s horse is arguably on his day the best seven furlong specialist around. Against weaker opposition expect this four year old to get back to winning ways after a slightly disappointing seasonal debut. Pat Smullen is an interesting booking too.
Crockford’s Whisper – Body And Soul e/w (York 2.50)
This filly showed some excellent form last season (including at the course) beating Moviesta. At around 14/1 a bold run certainly would not be a surprise as she was highly tested last time out in the Group Two Duke Of York Stakes at the Dante Meeting earlier this month.
Archer’s Selection – Rye House (Newmarket 3.35)
Archer would have certainly known that this horse was the main chance at Newmarket this afternoon. The impressive win last season at York would have caught the jockey’s eye.
Crockford’s Gambles on Saturday 31 May:
Haydock – Cubanita (2.05), Garswood (2.40), York Glory (3.15) and Parbold (3.50)
Newmarket – Peacock (1.55), Don’t Bother Me (3.00) and Rye House (3.35)
York – Sirius Prospect (1.50), Cap O’Rushes e/w (2.20), Body And Soul e/w (2.50), Crackentorp e/w and High Office e/w (3.25)
Chester – Baitha Alga (2.00) and Beautiful View e/w (2.30)
