Kevin Ryan’s The Grey Gatsby to test Australia’s International credentials on day one of the Ebor Festival 2014
The double Derby winning Australia is set to clash with the French Derby victor The Grey Gatsby in the Group One Juddmonte International on day one of the Ebor Festival 2014. Australia was more than impressive in his taking of the English and Irish Classics and will start the race a warm favourite with the punters, but the value may be in the form of The Grey Gatsby.
Overlooked by the bookies Ryan’s colt is marked up at double-figure prices which are tempting when considering the nature of his Chantilly success. The grey has shown a liking for the track when claiming the Dante back in the spring and should not be judged on his last run at Longchamp. In what is a strong renewal of the International both Telescope and Mukhadram are worthy of respect and must not be overlooked.
The Derby second Kingston Hill will line up in the Great Voltigeur (3.05) and looks set to assert his dominance over his rivals after posting a respectable fourth in the Eclipse.
The big sprint which opens the meeting at (1.55) is competitive with Goldream holding an excellent chance alongside the once useful Bogart who has dropped to a very workable weight.
Crockford’s Dead Cert – Kingston Hill (Great Voltigeur 3.05)
The Derby second is back to what is probably his optimum distance after a very credible fourth in the Eclipse at Sandown. The Varian grey has the class to dominant his rivals and will benefit from the services of the excellent Ryan Moore.
Crockford’s Whisper – The Grey Gatsby e/w (Juddmonte International 3.40)
Runaway winner of the French Derby and an impressive victor over course and distance in the Dante, the bookies appear to have overlooked the real chances of this battling grey. Do not be surprised if this whisper truly tests the credentials of the mighty Australia.
