Second season novices have an excellent record in the big race with twenty two seven year olds having won – Will Bobs Worth be another? Crockford assesses the chances of Henderson’s class horse taking the prize.

The RSA winner Bobs Worth is a quality horse but it will be a big ask for him to win this competitive race first time out. Crockford when casting his eye over the card became nervous for Bobs Worth’s chances when he noticed his old rival First Lieutenant amongst the opposition and hardy campaigners such as Tidal Bay, Carruthers and even the mercurial Diamond Harry on a low weight lining up.  It will be a great training performance if he can land the wagers. Crockford, however likes the each way chances of Henderson’s other runner Roberto Goldback who won well at Ascot last time out and will have some of the weight taken off his back by Jeremiah McGrath claiming five.

Rebecca Curtis has what many consider the Welsh Grand National winner to be in the race – Teaforthree. He is not without each way chances but will not be Rebecca’s strongest hope of a winner today. Curtis (the up and coming Welsh trainer) looks to potentially have one of her best days ever today with four good chances across the card at Newbury; Benheir (1.25), At Fishers Cross (2.35), Teaforthree (3.10) and Gus Macrae (3.40). With AP McCoy and Patrick Corbett partnering her horses she stands a on the brink of a very successful Saturday.

Crockford’s Dead Cert – Mount Benbulben (1.55 Fairyhouse)

Classy as a hurdler and under the stewardship of the shrewd Gordon Elliott things should come right today for his career over the larger obstacles. Connections think a lot of him and his last two runs have to be put to one side.

Crockford’s Whisper – Roberto Goldback e/w (3.10 Newbury)

Formerly from Dessie Hughes and now with Henderson he could not have been more impressive in his Ascot win. With a claimer taking weight of his back and a like for the conditions this former Irish classy horse has a very strong whisper about him for a good run in the big race today.

Archer’s Selection – Bog Warrior (3.00 Fairyhouse)

Archer would have noticed his entry into this hurdle race and would have been eager to partner this smart jumper. This race may be about building confidence but his class will still show.
