California Chrome looks set to lift the US Triple Crown by winning the Belmont Stakes tonight

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner will be the first horse since Affirmed (in 1978) to claim the US Triple Crown if he can win the Belmont Stakes tonight. Art Sherman’s California Chrome goes to the race off the back of six straight wins and will be a short-priced favourite to make history.

In his way will be some old rivals including the Preakness second Ride On Curlin, who will seek to reverse the placings in the “Test Of The Champion”.

The Triple Crown is run over the short period of five weeks that truly tests the stamina and ability of any horse hoping to land the elusive racing trinity. Eleven horses have landed the first two races of the Triple Crown since 1978 but each has failed to claim the Belmont Stakes.

California Chrome’s story has captured the imagination of the nation and has led to the Nashville stars Templeton Thompson & Sam Gay recording the song “Bring It On Home Chrome” .

Earlier on the valuable Belmont card, Jeremy Noseda’s globe-trotting Grandeur will seek to land the Grade One Manhattan Stakes. Unlucky in running in the Man O’War Stakes connections will hope that Grandeur will be able to reverse placings with Imagining.
